  • "As a recently retired military person, i was sceptical about attending a civilian firearms course and what I would learn.
The MFTC is a professional and relevant course, the instruction was excellent as were the facilities. I found the scenario based module extremely useful, providing me with the opportunity to fire from an elevated position against water borne targets using different 7.62 calibre weapons at realistic ranges. This course has given me the confidence and proven competence that I can operate with a variety of weapons at various ranges in a maritime environment".

Against the background of an increased focus on the maritime security sector and more stringent regulation of the provision of armed security guards on vessels transiting the High Risk Area (HRA), Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) are being asked to provide evidence of the firearms competency of their Maritime Security Operatives (MSOs). The Maritime Firearms Training Course (MFTC) has been developed by MIRIS International to provide realistic and professional maritime firearms training which will allow MSOs to demonstrate that they have recently completed appropriate training in preparation for their duties as armed maritime security services providers.

THE MFTC

The MFTC one day course training programme begins with the use of a semi-automatic M4 colt platform. After refreshing Normal Safety Precautions (NSP's) and marksmanship principles, the onus is very much on rapid target acquisition from a variety of fire positions enabling students to re-familiarise themselves with safe firearms practices. This is followed with a shotgun demo using both solid slug and buckshot to highlight the capabilities and limitations of this system. Student participation is included.

The remainder of the course is very much focused on long range marksmanship using a variety of 7.62/.308 bolt action platforms. Further training is conducted at ranges from 50 – 700 metres and in various firing positions to simulate firing from a vessel. The programme culminates in a number of maritime scenario shoots, enhanced by the use of small craft on water as the target from an elevated firing position. In addition to firearms training, immediate first aid and the treatment of basic gunshot trauma wounds is refreshed.

The aim of the MFTC is to provide potential and current MSOs with the required basic skills to safely operate various firearm systems on board a vessel transiting the HRA. Any attendees who do not reach the required standard will be advised to attend further firearms training before being awarded the MFTC Certificate.

The MFTC is conducted under the supervision and expertise of WMS Firearms Training, a professional company with excellent facilities and the ability to provide the following training:

  • NSPs
  • Marksmanship Principles
  • Multi-Position Shooting
  • Target engagement out to 700m – craft on water target
  • Application of Holdover and Dial-in for elevation and wind (sighting)
  • Maritime Scenarios
  • Refresher in basic gunshot trauma training

WMS' instructors are licenced to conduct zeroing and training practice utilising a selection of firearms systems including bolt action .308 rifles.
